Stop Asking for Permission to Pursue Your Dreams

Because the only person who can give you permission is YOU.

My professional background is in HR & Operations, this tends to put me on the receiving end of questions to do with job search processes, resumé writing, how to wow the interviewers, how to trick the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) etc. To be honest, I enjoy helping people with this stuff, I even ended up doing it as a side hustle for some time, and the one thing that I have observed repeatedly is that people tend to trust everyone else’s opinion but themselves.

Why do we trust everyone else’s opinion but ours?

I will give you an example of a recent encounter I had with an acquaintance, I will call her Anne. Anne had been looking for a job for almost a year, but for some reason, she couldn’t get a decent job, just some temporary jobs here and there. So, she asked me to help her out, we worked on her resumé together, drafted a decent cover letter, and based on her work experience and education background I suggested a few other job options she could pursue if plan ‘A’ didn’t work out.

About a month later, she sends me the following text:

Hey…. I saw this job advert; do you think I should apply for it? Do you think I can hack it?
