How To Break Free From Mediocrity And Step Into Greatness
Lean into your strengths
I grew up knowing that what I am good at and what comes naturally to me does not count.
If it comes easy, then it is not valuable — that’s the message I got.
This line of thought continued to be reinforced in school. For example, for one to be considered a good student, one had to be great in all subjects: Sciences. History. Math. Arts. Languages.
If you were good at one subject, then you are not a good student. Three subjects out of five, still not good enough. You had to be good at all subjects, or accept that you are a failure.
And don’t forget sports. I was forced to join the school’s basketball team because I am tall. The problem was that I was very thin. I had a delicate physique. Any physical impact from someone who was heavier than me would knock me on the ground right away. And to be honest, I didn’t even want to be there in the first place. I hated it. I spent half the time on the ground and not dunking shots as expected of tall people in a basketball team. I gave up.
This is something that I have somehow carried into adulthood. I put my strengths on the backseat and my weaknesses on the front seat.
